General Update - May 7, 2021

A graveside service was held for Joyce at the Moscow, Idaho cemetery with friends and family in attendance. She was buried beside her daughter, Juanita Kay Fleener, as Joyce had purchased two burial plots in the 1980s when the family had anticipated that Juanita's daughter, who was also involved in the same vehicular accident, would not survive her injuries sustained.

Gravestone selection process is still underway and will be confirmed in the days to come.

Joyce's granddaughter, Christy, shared a moving remembrance with those in attendance at the graveside service.

Joyce was buried with her childhood teddy bear, ruby ring which Dusty gifted to her to replace one that was stolen from her by a crooked jeweler in northern Idaho when she was 13-years-old (story to be shared at a later date), and her Eagle Scout Mother's pin from Dusty's replacement Eagle Scout Award kit.

The family met at the Viola Community Center afterward, joined by other friends and family members who could not make the graveside service for Joyce.

Carol and Connie are to be commended for making all of the arrangements, providing provisions, and setting up the photos and items on display at the memory table.

Obituary
Marva Joyce Fleener (nee Briney) was born to Alice Elanor (nee Rosenfelt) and Vernon Everett Briney in Rapid City, South Dakota on June 13, 1937. She grew up on the Rathdrum prairie of Idaho with her mother, and her oldest sister, Nyla June, picking cherries at her family’s orchard while her father was away from home building highways throughout the mid-western states. In her youth she was active in 4-H and dreamed about one day being a nurse.

Joyce married Loyal Ivan Fleener, whom she met in 1955. The couple moved to their first home in Worley, Idaho before emigrating to Moscow, Idaho in 1959 following the purchase of an old homestead property on Estes Road from pioneer, Burt Ayer. They had three sons and adopted a daughter from Korea via Holt International. They were active with the Assembly of God Church in Moscow. Her siblings, Skip and Kathy, lived with her during their high school years. Loyal and Joyce divorced in 1986.

Over the course of her days Joyce was a farm wife, a Sunday school teacher, a tax preparer, the family medic, a noted water witch, and was an early advocate for youth dyslexia support in the Moscow School District. She served nearly four decades with the Moscow H&R Block office in many roles including as the Moscow office manager and later as the quality control officer for the quad city franchise offices until her retirement.  

Joyce was happiest at her farmhouse, having a lifelong passion for gardening, canning her own produce, baking, and cooking meals for family and friends. Joyce loved science fiction and fantasy stories, crafting, and dabbling with lepidoptery. Family gatherings always featured Joyce's pies, and at Christmas, her delicious cinnamon rolls. A member of the Estes Club, Joyce joined at the invitation of her sister-in-law in the same year she moved to Moscow and looked forward to meeting with “the Estes Club ladies” until her health declined.

Joyce smiled with her eyes and was an avid “hug collector,” ensuring she consistently got a hug from all friends, family, and anyone else who was willing to “donate a hug to the little old lady wearing purple.”

Joyce passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 29, 2021 from respiratory failure. She was preceded by her parents, older sister, and daughter (Juanita Kay Fleener). She is survived by her baby brother John “Skip” Briney; youngest sister Kathy Huffman; sons Craig (Carol), Timothy (Shelley), Phillip (Connie), and Dustin (Jessica) Fleener; grandchildren Shannen (Fred) Kilborn, Shayne (Jami) Dean, Christy Fleener, Zac (Nicole) Fleener, Trevor Pierce, and Cortney Preston; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at the Moscow, Idaho cemetery for Joyce on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 11 a.m. with a gathering for friends and family at the Viola Community Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Joyce’s name to the Moscow 4-H Club or the Moscow High School Future Farmers of America chapter.

07/24/2020 Dusty missed calling Joyce due to personal schedule conflicts. 07/25/2020 Dusty called in to check with Joyce at 1 p.m. following a training session he attended for Scouts BSA. Lunch today was spaghetti "with a delicious meat sauce," a side of veggies and dessert was vanilla pudding. Joyce confessed that she might not have remembered it had the tray not still been sitting beside her with the remnants of the meal. She had today off from physical therapy but did have speech/mental therapy. She said that some of the questions that the speech therapists ask her are "laughable" because they ask her if she has lived in rural areas and then ask her about what she thinks living in the rural areas are like after already verifying she lives in the country. General Update #95

07/27/2020 Dusty called Joyce to check in and wish her a good night while he was preparing dinner for Jess. Joyce was alert and quite talkative. Dusty reviewed the plan for the telehealth appointment scheduled for tomorrow and Joyce stated that no one had told her that was occurring. Dusty suggested to Joyce that they were going to visit with her tomorrow morning ahead of the appointment based on what Rachael had told him and Joyce concurred. Dusty questioned Joyce about her decline of participating in the urinary incontinence therapy as well as her reported lack of performance with physical therapy. Joyce stated that she had been looking forward to the urinary incontinence therapy work but according to her they only spoke to her once about it and then never again approached her about it.  Joyce felt like they don't do enough PT with her even though she wants to do more PT. General Update #85

Dusty and Jess called Joyce in the evening on July 4 to wish her a happy Independence Day.  Joyce reported that her pain levels were fairly low, even after doing upper body physical therapy work earlier in the day. She was a little disappointed with her meals served. She had been hoping that they would serve hot dogs and potato salad for lunch or dinner but none were to be had. Joyce could not recall what she ate for any of her three meals she was served. At the time of the phone call Joyce had not seen any fireworks out her north facing window but she could hear several concussive blasts of fireworks being set off near Dusty and Jess' apartment.  Joyce said that she did not see or hear the Let Freedom Ring Tour (a B-25 Mitchell, a F-7F Tigercat, a P-47 Thunderbolt, a P40N Warhawk, and a P51D Mustang), which was sponsored by Hangar180 , fly overhead around 5:45 p.m. but she might've missed it most likely owing to having been napping at the time.
