General Update #140

Dusty asked Joyce if she wanted to go through the pile of newspapers that Craig had kept set aside for her in her absence. Joyce declined, stating that she had "flipped through" the papers "wherever she had been" [Aspen Park]. Dusty confirmed that he would bundle them to be taken to recycling tomorrow. 

Joyce expressed that she was unable to get her shoes situated correctly (~4:45 p.m.) and got up to locate a larger shoe horn to facilitate getting them set correct (she got her left shoe on but removed the right citing it not sitting well). She refused help from Dusty, wanting to "do it herself." Joyce got up from the recliner without using the powered riser and headed off down the hallway using her walker. Dusty caught up with her as she made her way into her bedroom. 

Joyce pushed her walker away from her as she entered her bedroom and steadied herself using her bed and one of her dresser frames for stability. Joyce rummaged through 3 drawers beside her bed, not finding the larger shoe horn. Joyce's knee began to cramp, causing Dusty to intervene to prevent her from falling. With assistance, Joyce was able to be seated upon the bed to recover. She continued her search for her larger shoehorn, unsuccessfully, having several moments of distraction as her eyes caught sight of other things or items in her room in an A.D.D. manner. Dusty managed to get her to focus, attempting to assist her with locating the shoe horn but was unsuccessful. Joyce then announced they should watch a movie and proceeded to leave the bedroom after gaining assistance in reclaiming her walker she'd pushed away. 

Joyce gave Dusty an envelope with $340 in cash that had been in her purse, instructing him to use it to purchase supplies in town. Dusty confirmed, counting it out with her and verifying the amount on the exterior of the envelope. Dusty informed Joyce that Carol and Connie were overseeing her finances now and that he would inform them Joyce was giving him the envelope (and that it existed). Dusty explained that it probably should stay with Joyce but she cited that she wants it with him so it does not go missing and so he can get appropriate groceries to meet her low-sodium diet directive.

Joyce experienced pain on her walk out to the kitchen, stating "ow" with every step. Dusty suggested that her knee was unhappy she only had one shoe on her foot as it might be causing her body to experience imbalance issues. Joyce flopped down onto her recliner, abandoning use of her walker in an unsafe manner and without setting brakes. Dusty reviewed use of the power recliner controls and that Joyce could injure herself if she continues to flop down onto the chair. Also reviewed was proper procedure for use of the walker and setting its brakes for safety. Dusty helped Joyce set her right shoe into place using the "small" shoehorn. 

Joyce asked what movie they were watching. Dusty informed her it was "Wreck-It Ralph." Joyce stated that she doesn't know it. Joyce proceeded to look for more money to provide to Dusty to go buy supplies in town. Dusty informed Joyce she does not need to do that. Joyce became slightly frustrated, stating that she "will just stop what she is doing." Dusty worked to steer Joyce back to watching the movie and not focusing on being frustrated.

Dusty suggested Joyce get her oxygen line on as she needed it back in place. Joyce asked if she has oxygen lines to put on. Dusty confirmed and moved to assist her in getting it setup as she became distracted with wanting to use her hand broom and dust pan to sweep up the area in front of her recliner, and then sat perplexed in trying to examine her oxygen concentrator. Joyce had difficulty in comprehending the hose, what she was seeing, and processing how to place the cannula tubing into place. Once Dusty placed the nasal tubing in her hand, Joyce was able to slip on the cannula. Joyce spotted the discarded cannula tubing in the garbage can near her recliner and retrieved it, studying it out of concern that it should not have been in there. Dusty confirmed that it was to be discarded, being old and dirty, and helped Joyce replace it to the trash can. Joyce stated that she wanted to ensure it was garbage before she added more garbage to the trash can. Joyce expressed that she didn't know how it attached (to the garbage can). Dusty explained that the cannula wouldn't connect to the garbage can. Joyce seemed to accept this, but then was concerned by the old cannula being in the trash can. Dusty pushed it to the bottom of the trash can and Joyce seemed to become placated.

Joyce proceeded to fidget and shift in her recliner, working to study and examine random items on the shelving to the right of her chair.

07/24/2020 Dusty missed calling Joyce due to personal schedule conflicts. 07/25/2020 Dusty called in to check with Joyce at 1 p.m. following a training session he attended for Scouts BSA. Lunch today was spaghetti "with a delicious meat sauce," a side of veggies and dessert was vanilla pudding. Joyce confessed that she might not have remembered it had the tray not still been sitting beside her with the remnants of the meal. She had today off from physical therapy but did have speech/mental therapy. She said that some of the questions that the speech therapists ask her are "laughable" because they ask her if she has lived in rural areas and then ask her about what she thinks living in the rural areas are like after already verifying she lives in the country. Dusty suggested that the therapists are trying to use something basic, like knowledge of Joyce living in the country, to then ask questions about living in the country to see how Joyce recalls information or rela...

General Update #95

07/27/2020 Dusty called Joyce to check in and wish her a good night while he was preparing dinner for Jess. Joyce was alert and quite talkative. Dusty reviewed the plan for the telehealth appointment scheduled for tomorrow and Joyce stated that no one had told her that was occurring. Dusty suggested to Joyce that they were going to visit with her tomorrow morning ahead of the appointment based on what Rachael had told him and Joyce concurred. Dusty questioned Joyce about her decline of participating in the urinary incontinence therapy as well as her reported lack of performance with physical therapy. Joyce stated that she had been looking forward to the urinary incontinence therapy work but according to her they only spoke to her once about it and then never again approached her about it.  Joyce felt like they don't do enough PT with her even though she wants to do more PT. General Update #85

Dusty and Jess called Joyce in the evening on July 4 to wish her a happy Independence Day.  Joyce reported that her pain levels were fairly low, even after doing upper body physical therapy work earlier in the day. She was a little disappointed with her meals served. She had been hoping that they would serve hot dogs and potato salad for lunch or dinner but none were to be had. Joyce could not recall what she ate for any of her three meals she was served. At the time of the phone call Joyce had not seen any fireworks out her north facing window but she could hear several concussive blasts of fireworks being set off near Dusty and Jess' apartment.  Joyce said that she did not see or hear the Let Freedom Ring Tour (a B-25 Mitchell, a F-7F Tigercat, a P-47 Thunderbolt, a P40N Warhawk, and a P51D Mustang), which was sponsored by Hangar180 , fly overhead around 5:45 p.m. but she might've missed it most likely owing to having been napping at the time.
