General Update #228 - Friday, November 27, 2020

9:30 a.m. - Dusty arrived to farmhouse late after picking up supplies for Jess and the farmhouse, and picking up breakfast from McDonald's for Joyce. Joyce found sitting awake in her recliner, without oxygen, eating pumpkin pie with Cool Whip topping. Joyce stated that she had to fend for herself as "the girl who usually arrived to ask [her] what [she] wants for breakfast" was late and had not shown up to take care of her this morning. Joyce thought that Dusty needed to talk to "that nurse" (forgot it was Jess, even after being reminded twice) so that it did not happen again.

9:40 a.m. - 2nd Breakfast (hotcakes, scrambled eggs, sausage patty) - Joyce too full from eating her large slice of pie, only ate the scrambled eggs and then requested remaining breakfast platter be put into fridge for her to eat later in the day.

10 a.m. - Morning medication administered with grape juice (Joyce had gotten it out earlier in the morning while getting pie for herself but did not get into it). Compression stockings put onto Joyce to mitigate swelling.

10:50 a.m. - Enrichment activity (folding laundry). 

Noon - Bathroom trip, Joyce was dry until she released her bladder early before fully seating herself onto the toilet riser. Remainder of urine passed. Toilet seat riser, floor and sink sanitized. Weight 157.4 lbs. PT walk into living room then returned to recliner to nap.

1:43 p.m. - Bathroom trip without incident. Urine passed. 

2:08 p.m. - BP 122/73, pulse 82. BGL @ 115.

2:15 p.m. - Lunch (plate of Thanksgiving dinner leftovers - mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, roll, turkey, green bean casserole) - all but turkey eaten. Joyce stated turkey was too difficult for her to eat with her bad teeth.

5 p.m. - Dusty cleaned and trimmed Joyce's fingernails. 

5:26 p.m. - Bathroom trip. Urinary incontinence. Diaper and diaper pad insert replaced. Joyce declined PT walk and returned to recliner to nap.

7:50 p.m. - Dinner. Joyce insisted on having a cold turkey sandwich using the Thanksgiving Day leftovers despite Dusty reminding her she could not eat the turkey earlier in the day. Joyce irritated that there was no mayonnaise for the sandwich as Dusty had thrown it out when he cleaned out the refrigerator earlier in the summer in preparation for Joyce returning to farmhouse. Dusty explained that what had been in the fridge had expired in 2018. Joyce stated that it was still good as she had been using it before her accident for sandwiches and should not have been thrown out. Dusty prepared turkey sandwich as Joyce directed. Joyce attempted to eat sandwich after several modifications and became increasingly irritated. Joyce attempted to state she was not hungry when Dusty worked on providing her alternative options for dinner. Joyce very emotional. After conflict subsided, Dusty was able to negotiate Joyce eat a 1/2 peanut butter and honey sandwich and 1/2 a banana. 

8:29 p.m. - Joyce given small slice of pumpkin pie with Cool Whip topping after negotiations and explanations about blood glucose levels was worked out. 

10:06 p.m. - Bathroom. Urinary incontinence. Remainder of urine passed. Wound cleaned and barrier cream applied. PT walk declined.

10:20 p.m. - Evening medication administered to Joyce after discovering she had not taken it during the conflict over her evening meal negotiations. 

Dusty departing ~10:30 p.m., returning tomorrow to provide all day care for Joyce.

07/24/2020 Dusty missed calling Joyce due to personal schedule conflicts. 07/25/2020 Dusty called in to check with Joyce at 1 p.m. following a training session he attended for Scouts BSA. Lunch today was spaghetti "with a delicious meat sauce," a side of veggies and dessert was vanilla pudding. Joyce confessed that she might not have remembered it had the tray not still been sitting beside her with the remnants of the meal. She had today off from physical therapy but did have speech/mental therapy. She said that some of the questions that the speech therapists ask her are "laughable" because they ask her if she has lived in rural areas and then ask her about what she thinks living in the rural areas are like after already verifying she lives in the country. Dusty suggested that the therapists are trying to use something basic, like knowledge of Joyce living in the country, to then ask questions about living in the country to see how Joyce recalls information or rela...

General Update #95

07/27/2020 Dusty called Joyce to check in and wish her a good night while he was preparing dinner for Jess. Joyce was alert and quite talkative. Dusty reviewed the plan for the telehealth appointment scheduled for tomorrow and Joyce stated that no one had told her that was occurring. Dusty suggested to Joyce that they were going to visit with her tomorrow morning ahead of the appointment based on what Rachael had told him and Joyce concurred. Dusty questioned Joyce about her decline of participating in the urinary incontinence therapy as well as her reported lack of performance with physical therapy. Joyce stated that she had been looking forward to the urinary incontinence therapy work but according to her they only spoke to her once about it and then never again approached her about it.  Joyce felt like they don't do enough PT with her even though she wants to do more PT. General Update #85

Dusty and Jess called Joyce in the evening on July 4 to wish her a happy Independence Day.  Joyce reported that her pain levels were fairly low, even after doing upper body physical therapy work earlier in the day. She was a little disappointed with her meals served. She had been hoping that they would serve hot dogs and potato salad for lunch or dinner but none were to be had. Joyce could not recall what she ate for any of her three meals she was served. At the time of the phone call Joyce had not seen any fireworks out her north facing window but she could hear several concussive blasts of fireworks being set off near Dusty and Jess' apartment.  Joyce said that she did not see or hear the Let Freedom Ring Tour (a B-25 Mitchell, a F-7F Tigercat, a P-47 Thunderbolt, a P40N Warhawk, and a P51D Mustang), which was sponsored by Hangar180 , fly overhead around 5:45 p.m. but she might've missed it most likely owing to having been napping at the time.
