General Update #336 - Sunday, March 14, 2021

8:50 a.m. - Dusty arrived to farmhouse after running errands in Moscow. Joyce awake in recliner without oxygen line on place. Joyce claimed to have taken herself to the bathroom before Dusty arrived and passed urine. Evidence Joyce had been up and moving around the farmhouse, had moved items and various things "that were bothering her." Joyce experiencing some confusion. Joyce did not know who Dusty was, felt like she was being "bawled out" for moving things and rearranging things in her own house when Dusty asked what she had been up to - felt like she was being treated with suspicion. Dusty clarified that he was concerned what she was doing without anyone around because he didn't want her going places she could lose her balance or attempting to move heavy items without help. Dusty cited Joyce's fall down the basement stairs as reason for protective actions and concerns - Joyce did not recall falling down basement stairs. Joyce also stated that she did not know she was at the farmhouse a few minutes later in dialogue had with Dusty.

9:12 a.m. - BP 161/101, pulse 76. BGL @ 120. Bathroom trip refused.

Clocks advanced to compensate for Daylight Savings Time.

9:22 a.m. - Morning medication with nutritional shake. Joyce expressed high amount of suspicion about medication, wanted verification it was what it was and that nothing had been mixed into her nutritional shake "that would make her dumb."

9:27 a.m. - Breakfast (McDonald's sausage and egg McMuffin, diced peaches). Joyce eating very slowly.

10:07 a.m. - Breakfast suspended - Joyce soiled herself, became upset because "it just came right out!" Chair pad replaced and Joyce shuffled into bathroom. Dusty assisted in cleaning Joyce up and getting her onto toilet. Hallway floors sanitized. Remainder of type 6 bowel movement passed. Joyce was showered, shoes sanitized. 

Weight @ 158 lbs. PT walk, returning to recliner by 11:22 a.m.

Throughout showering process Joyce did not know where she was (believed she was at some sort of care facility) and did not know who Dusty was, believing him to be a nurse. Joyce was surprised when Dusty brought her fresh clothes to change into because she didn't think she "had enough clothes here." 

11:23 a.m. - Breakfast resumed. Finished by 12:24 p.m. Joyce began napping while Dusty went outside to begin dethatching backyard lawn, rake leaves, and pickup fallen branches from winter storm damage.

1:35 p.m. - Joyce still napping, refused bathroom trip when woken by Dusty when he came in to get water.

~3:50 p.m. - Connie arrived to farmhouse.

4:12 p.m. - Bathroom trip. Urinary incontinence. Bladder voided into diaper - nothing left to pass, which confused Joyce when "nothing would come out." Diaper and pad replaced. PT walk to living room. Returned to recliner by 4:26 p.m. 

Connie departed farmhouse.

5:52 p.m. - BP 135/69, pulse 67. BGL @ 118.

5:54 p.m. - Dinner (honey glazed turkey, potatoes, steamed veggies, tapioca pudding, nutritional shake). Evening medication. Dinner finished by 6:36 p.m., all but green beans eaten. Joyce stated that eating green beans is too hard for her to eat with her lack of teeth.

Joyce began napping hard.

7:47 p.m. - Joyce woke from napping abruptly. Very confused, wanting to make conversation with Dusty but was not making sense. Dusty readjusted Joyce's oxygen line which had been shifted out of place. Joyce didn't know who Dusty was, who had been caring for her, could not articulate her thoughts, was very concerned over why she was still alive and why the kids had not taken over the farm and "why she was here." Joyce expressed concern about being helpless, was upset about being old and at the end of her life. Joyce doesn't want to face dying or being old or not being able to do things. Joyce very emotional. Joyce upset that all she can do anymore is sit in a chair and use the toilet. Joyce sad that the family has to care for her and she cannot live on her own. Dusty worked on talking Joyce through her emotions. Joyce concerned "people will take my smile away." Dusty hugged Joyce and held her hand, but Joyce remained very emotional and confused for a length of time. Dusty attempted to distract Joyce's mind by showing her pictures from his phone (slightly effective). Dusty talked Joyce into having some tapioca pudding.

Joyce continued to weave between talking about how she was both at an elder care facility and at her farmhouse but could not focus on fact she was at farmhouse when Dusty attempted to help her comprehend where she was at right now. Joyce frequently asked who Dusty was, would acknowledge who Dusty was, ask how he was involved in her life, and what he was doing to care for her and why he was so nice to her (compared to the other man who was mean to her in the morning - who "bawled her out" for doing things in her own home).

8:12 p.m. - Tapioca pudding cup. Joyce informed Dusty that the pudding worked in making her feel better - still did not know who Dusty was. Dusty continued talking with Joyce and working to set her at ease. Joyce eventually calmed and began sleeping hard.

10:20 p.m. - Bathroom trip declined.

~10:30 p.m. - Dusty departed farmhouse.

07/24/2020 Dusty missed calling Joyce due to personal schedule conflicts. 07/25/2020 Dusty called in to check with Joyce at 1 p.m. following a training session he attended for Scouts BSA. Lunch today was spaghetti "with a delicious meat sauce," a side of veggies and dessert was vanilla pudding. Joyce confessed that she might not have remembered it had the tray not still been sitting beside her with the remnants of the meal. She had today off from physical therapy but did have speech/mental therapy. She said that some of the questions that the speech therapists ask her are "laughable" because they ask her if she has lived in rural areas and then ask her about what she thinks living in the rural areas are like after already verifying she lives in the country. Dusty suggested that the therapists are trying to use something basic, like knowledge of Joyce living in the country, to then ask questions about living in the country to see how Joyce recalls information or rela...

General Update #95

07/27/2020 Dusty called Joyce to check in and wish her a good night while he was preparing dinner for Jess. Joyce was alert and quite talkative. Dusty reviewed the plan for the telehealth appointment scheduled for tomorrow and Joyce stated that no one had told her that was occurring. Dusty suggested to Joyce that they were going to visit with her tomorrow morning ahead of the appointment based on what Rachael had told him and Joyce concurred. Dusty questioned Joyce about her decline of participating in the urinary incontinence therapy as well as her reported lack of performance with physical therapy. Joyce stated that she had been looking forward to the urinary incontinence therapy work but according to her they only spoke to her once about it and then never again approached her about it.  Joyce felt like they don't do enough PT with her even though she wants to do more PT. General Update #85

Dusty and Jess called Joyce in the evening on July 4 to wish her a happy Independence Day.  Joyce reported that her pain levels were fairly low, even after doing upper body physical therapy work earlier in the day. She was a little disappointed with her meals served. She had been hoping that they would serve hot dogs and potato salad for lunch or dinner but none were to be had. Joyce could not recall what she ate for any of her three meals she was served. At the time of the phone call Joyce had not seen any fireworks out her north facing window but she could hear several concussive blasts of fireworks being set off near Dusty and Jess' apartment.  Joyce said that she did not see or hear the Let Freedom Ring Tour (a B-25 Mitchell, a F-7F Tigercat, a P-47 Thunderbolt, a P40N Warhawk, and a P51D Mustang), which was sponsored by Hangar180 , fly overhead around 5:45 p.m. but she might've missed it most likely owing to having been napping at the time.
