General Update #33

Dusty checked in with nurse's station upon arrival at ~7:10 a.m. and passed Amanda (Joyce's overnight nurse) as she was departing. She confirmed that Joyce had not vomited after expressing she was experiencing nausea ~8 p.m. last night. Joyce was showered around 10:30 p.m. - 11 p.m. due to delays encountered by overnight team due to increase in patients. Joyce was just moved by nurse's aides into her room shower for her morning antimicrobial pre-operation shower. Jackie is Joyce's day shift nurse today, with Callie and Chanelle serving as aides. Sheree is the charge nurse.

7:20 a.m. - Joyce's day shift nurse, Jackie, arrived to provide rough timeline for the morning. Joyce will finish her shower and when she is settled back onto her bed they will start hooking up the EKG and other equipment for kidney stone removal procedure. Joyce's room will start to get busier as she is prepped to be moved down to the procedure theater ~8:30 a.m. The procedure will occur about 9 a.m. and Dr. Keizur will arrive to provide an update to Dusty about how things went. Dusty is welcome to remain in the room and is encouraged to do so as that is where Dr. Keizur will look for him. 

7:56 a.m. - Joyce is back in her bed and awaiting arrival of procedure prep team. 

7:58 a.m. - Camie from the Gritman respiratory team arrived to perform EKG on Joyce. Camie had arrived to try and to take it earlier in the morning but Joyce was in the shower at that time. Dusty excused from the room while this was done. EKG concluded by 8:04 a.m. and Joyce deemed good for procedure to continue.

8:07 a.m. - Joyce let Dusty know that she would like to go home. Dusty encouraged her to do well in PT when she goes to Good Samaritan, because if she does well at PT there and they feel confident that she can return to being independent at the farmhouse then she might get to be released sooner than the full four weeks' time (Dusty used the worst case number) she is currently estimated to be there. Joyce agreed, but still lamented not being able to "...just go home." 

8:19 a.m - Jackie arrived to prep IV bags for Joyce. Asked if Joyce was having difficulty breathing, Joyce indicated negative. 

8:20 a.m. - Nurse's aide, Kandi, arrived to say good morning to Joyce and to wish her well on the impending procedure. Jackie asked if the anesthesia record had been attached to Joyce's chart yet and Kandi departed to ensure that was done.

Current pain level:
7 out of 10 at ~7:58 a.m. (Joyce does not believe that she has been given pain relieving medication recently.) 

6 out of 10 "in middle back" when Jackie checked in on her at 8:19 a.m. Joyce assumed pain level had spiked earlier when Dusty had asked her at 7:58 a.m. because she had just been jostled by the aides who were getting her arranged into bed.

Visiting information:
No change from previous post. Awaiting confirmation from the charge nurse. 
Overheard while out in hallway that yesterday room 214 had visitors (one without a mask, not sure how that happened) and that was not to have occurred, and today there is a visitor in a different room who needs to be monitored for leaving the building as he has tobacco products and may be using them even while in the room (assuming chewing tobacco). When Dusty's presence was brought up as FYI about visitors on the floor the nurse staff all agreed that was an exception to current rule of "no visitors" due to Joyce's Alzheimer's and he has been serving as family's central point for information and they appreciated it as it cut down on their stress.   

Confirmed with nurse's station shift leader at 11:05 a.m. (on 6/6/2020) - currently only 1 visitor per day for Joyce, no exceptions. Once current visitor departs Joyce's room, no further visits for the rest of the day. No swapping out visitors (example, Dusty cannot remain on hospital grounds while Craig goes to sit with Joyce for an hour and then Dusty returns to room).

07/24/2020 Dusty missed calling Joyce due to personal schedule conflicts. 07/25/2020 Dusty called in to check with Joyce at 1 p.m. following a training session he attended for Scouts BSA. Lunch today was spaghetti "with a delicious meat sauce," a side of veggies and dessert was vanilla pudding. Joyce confessed that she might not have remembered it had the tray not still been sitting beside her with the remnants of the meal. She had today off from physical therapy but did have speech/mental therapy. She said that some of the questions that the speech therapists ask her are "laughable" because they ask her if she has lived in rural areas and then ask her about what she thinks living in the rural areas are like after already verifying she lives in the country. Dusty suggested that the therapists are trying to use something basic, like knowledge of Joyce living in the country, to then ask questions about living in the country to see how Joyce recalls information or rela...

General Update #95

07/27/2020 Dusty called Joyce to check in and wish her a good night while he was preparing dinner for Jess. Joyce was alert and quite talkative. Dusty reviewed the plan for the telehealth appointment scheduled for tomorrow and Joyce stated that no one had told her that was occurring. Dusty suggested to Joyce that they were going to visit with her tomorrow morning ahead of the appointment based on what Rachael had told him and Joyce concurred. Dusty questioned Joyce about her decline of participating in the urinary incontinence therapy as well as her reported lack of performance with physical therapy. Joyce stated that she had been looking forward to the urinary incontinence therapy work but according to her they only spoke to her once about it and then never again approached her about it.  Joyce felt like they don't do enough PT with her even though she wants to do more PT. General Update #85

Dusty and Jess called Joyce in the evening on July 4 to wish her a happy Independence Day.  Joyce reported that her pain levels were fairly low, even after doing upper body physical therapy work earlier in the day. She was a little disappointed with her meals served. She had been hoping that they would serve hot dogs and potato salad for lunch or dinner but none were to be had. Joyce could not recall what she ate for any of her three meals she was served. At the time of the phone call Joyce had not seen any fireworks out her north facing window but she could hear several concussive blasts of fireworks being set off near Dusty and Jess' apartment.  Joyce said that she did not see or hear the Let Freedom Ring Tour (a B-25 Mitchell, a F-7F Tigercat, a P-47 Thunderbolt, a P40N Warhawk, and a P51D Mustang), which was sponsored by Hangar180 , fly overhead around 5:45 p.m. but she might've missed it most likely owing to having been napping at the time.
