General Update #39

1:24 p.m. - Joyce returned from bathroom. Good urine output but no bowel movement.

1:26 p.m. - Joyce asked Dusty if she has a bad vertebrae in her back. Dusty confirmed she fractured it.

1:35 p.m. - Joyce finished her lunch. Joyce had eaten the half banana and left less than a mouthful of mac & cheese in her bowl (along with mostly uneaten green beans). Joyce's V8, tea, and prune juice were finished as well.

1:43 p.m. - Joyce asked Dusty if they [Gritman] did something to her. Dusty asked her if she doesn't remember having her kidney stone removed. Joyce stated that they "don't keep [her] very coherent." Joyce does not recall being told that she had her kidney stone removed. "They did that?"  Joyce asked. Dusty confirmed. Joyce asked what the cost will be of being at Good Samaritan. Dusty informed her that Medicare will cover things for the first 20 days. Dusty asked Joyce if she remembers the plan for Good Samaritan and Joyce stated "vaguely."

1:53 p.m. - Jackie arrived to disconnect IV from Joyce. Dr. Brown stopped by simultaneously to inform Dusty that the urine culture was still showing negative for a urinary tract infection. Dr. Brown let Dusty know the family should feel free to ask her any questions and she will be glad to answer or get answers. Dr. Brown departed. Jackie asked Joyce how she was feeling and Joyce indicated she "is not feeling great." Jackie and other nurse from the floor succeeded in removing IV from Joyce. Jackie asked Joyce if she needed some medicine for her tummy (Zofran, an anti-nausea). Joyce agreed that would be good to have. Dusty asked Jackie if Joyce had a concussion on top of the fractured vertebrae and fractured ribs. Jackie said she would check the chart for Joyce but did not recall seeing that listed among the logged injuries or health concerns. Jackie followed up with Dusty about a phoned in concern (received by a different nurse) which was about Joyce's care. Possibly from one of Joyce's sister-in-laws or daughter-in-laws? Dusty informed Jackie he was unaware of any phone call made expressing concerns about Joyce's care from family members being made and so could not speak to the specific matter at this time. People have been texting him questions to ask Dr. Brown or nursing staff lately. Dusty only aware of the concern over urinary tract infection and concussion information. Dusty and Jackie visited about the hydrocodone concerns from the previous days, assuming it might have been about that, and it was confirmed that had been rectified. Jackie let Dusty know that if any concerns are had to let her know and she will immediately investigate. 

2:09 p.m. - Jackie returned to administer Zofran to Joyce.

Visiting information:
No change from previous post. Awaiting confirmation from the charge nurse. 
Confirmed with nurse's station shift leader at 11:05 a.m. (on 6/6/2020) - currently only 1 visitor per day for Joyce, no exceptions. Once current visitor departs Joyce's room, no further visits for the rest of the day. No swapping out visitors (example, Dusty cannot remain on hospital grounds while Craig goes to sit with Joyce for an hour and then Dusty returns to room).

07/24/2020 Dusty missed calling Joyce due to personal schedule conflicts. 07/25/2020 Dusty called in to check with Joyce at 1 p.m. following a training session he attended for Scouts BSA. Lunch today was spaghetti "with a delicious meat sauce," a side of veggies and dessert was vanilla pudding. Joyce confessed that she might not have remembered it had the tray not still been sitting beside her with the remnants of the meal. She had today off from physical therapy but did have speech/mental therapy. She said that some of the questions that the speech therapists ask her are "laughable" because they ask her if she has lived in rural areas and then ask her about what she thinks living in the rural areas are like after already verifying she lives in the country. Dusty suggested that the therapists are trying to use something basic, like knowledge of Joyce living in the country, to then ask questions about living in the country to see how Joyce recalls information or rela...

General Update #95

07/27/2020 Dusty called Joyce to check in and wish her a good night while he was preparing dinner for Jess. Joyce was alert and quite talkative. Dusty reviewed the plan for the telehealth appointment scheduled for tomorrow and Joyce stated that no one had told her that was occurring. Dusty suggested to Joyce that they were going to visit with her tomorrow morning ahead of the appointment based on what Rachael had told him and Joyce concurred. Dusty questioned Joyce about her decline of participating in the urinary incontinence therapy as well as her reported lack of performance with physical therapy. Joyce stated that she had been looking forward to the urinary incontinence therapy work but according to her they only spoke to her once about it and then never again approached her about it.  Joyce felt like they don't do enough PT with her even though she wants to do more PT. General Update #85

Dusty and Jess called Joyce in the evening on July 4 to wish her a happy Independence Day.  Joyce reported that her pain levels were fairly low, even after doing upper body physical therapy work earlier in the day. She was a little disappointed with her meals served. She had been hoping that they would serve hot dogs and potato salad for lunch or dinner but none were to be had. Joyce could not recall what she ate for any of her three meals she was served. At the time of the phone call Joyce had not seen any fireworks out her north facing window but she could hear several concussive blasts of fireworks being set off near Dusty and Jess' apartment.  Joyce said that she did not see or hear the Let Freedom Ring Tour (a B-25 Mitchell, a F-7F Tigercat, a P-47 Thunderbolt, a P40N Warhawk, and a P51D Mustang), which was sponsored by Hangar180 , fly overhead around 5:45 p.m. but she might've missed it most likely owing to having been napping at the time.
