General Update #81

Dusty and Jess called to check in with Joyce around 8:30 p.m.

Joyce reported that she had a delightful time visiting with Connie, Phil, and Zac who reserved time to sit outside and visit with her at Aspen Park's outdoor area this morning. The sitting area that Aspen Park is quite nice, said Joyce.

Dusty updated Joyce on her flowers and plants at the farm, having transferred them out onto the patio this afternoon. He also let her know that Zac and Connie have been doing a marvelous job keeping the lawn and border grasses under control. Dusty confirmed he is still working through Joyce's laundry so everything is nice and fresh for her return home. 

She asked to confirm why she was at Aspen Park, if it had something to do with some sort of an injury. Dusty and Jess reviewed her fall which caused two rib fractures and a fractured vertebrae. She then recalled what had happened.

Joyce reviewed the mail and cards she'd received so far and was most thankful for all that has come to her through mail or via Dusty dropping them off for her. The two letters Dusty had sent are still appear to have failed to arrive.

The thunderstorm which rolled in this afternoon was pleasant for Joyce to watch from her new position in her now north facing room, Room 208.

Dinner for Joyce this evening was a tortilla with meant, black beans and corn with a cookie for dessert. The cookies are made fresh in the kitchen, Joyce said, which makes them very soft and nice. She did not recall this immediately when asked but Jess worked with Joyce until she could recall what she'd eaten a few hours before.

Joyce asked if Dusty and Jess knew when she would be getting out of Aspen Park. Jess confirmed that at this point it looks like July 15 as long as the physical therapists and her primary care physician agree she can handle a return to the farm. Joyce acknowledged that she was not ready to go home. She doesn't want to remain at Aspen Park forever, but she understood that she needs the care and attention the skilled nursing staff can provide. Joyce hopes that she never takes another fall like the one she took down the stairs at the farm. 

Joyce ended the call, owing to difficulties in keeping the phone held up to her ear. 
She wishes everyone a good night.

Dusty attempted to visit Joyce through her room yesterday (6/26/2020) but discovered that the "space between the bushes" he was told existed by the staff was not easy to navigate nor comfortable to move between. Talking to Joyce through the window, as was previously possible when Joyce was in room 102, is not possible in her current room of 208.

It is recommended that family wanting to communicate with Joyce either schedule an appointment 24 hours in advance with the front desk staff at Aspen Park, or they call her room phone number direct outside of meal hours.

07/24/2020 Dusty missed calling Joyce due to personal schedule conflicts. 07/25/2020 Dusty called in to check with Joyce at 1 p.m. following a training session he attended for Scouts BSA. Lunch today was spaghetti "with a delicious meat sauce," a side of veggies and dessert was vanilla pudding. Joyce confessed that she might not have remembered it had the tray not still been sitting beside her with the remnants of the meal. She had today off from physical therapy but did have speech/mental therapy. She said that some of the questions that the speech therapists ask her are "laughable" because they ask her if she has lived in rural areas and then ask her about what she thinks living in the rural areas are like after already verifying she lives in the country. Dusty suggested that the therapists are trying to use something basic, like knowledge of Joyce living in the country, to then ask questions about living in the country to see how Joyce recalls information or rela...

General Update #95

07/27/2020 Dusty called Joyce to check in and wish her a good night while he was preparing dinner for Jess. Joyce was alert and quite talkative. Dusty reviewed the plan for the telehealth appointment scheduled for tomorrow and Joyce stated that no one had told her that was occurring. Dusty suggested to Joyce that they were going to visit with her tomorrow morning ahead of the appointment based on what Rachael had told him and Joyce concurred. Dusty questioned Joyce about her decline of participating in the urinary incontinence therapy as well as her reported lack of performance with physical therapy. Joyce stated that she had been looking forward to the urinary incontinence therapy work but according to her they only spoke to her once about it and then never again approached her about it.  Joyce felt like they don't do enough PT with her even though she wants to do more PT. General Update #85

Dusty and Jess called Joyce in the evening on July 4 to wish her a happy Independence Day.  Joyce reported that her pain levels were fairly low, even after doing upper body physical therapy work earlier in the day. She was a little disappointed with her meals served. She had been hoping that they would serve hot dogs and potato salad for lunch or dinner but none were to be had. Joyce could not recall what she ate for any of her three meals she was served. At the time of the phone call Joyce had not seen any fireworks out her north facing window but she could hear several concussive blasts of fireworks being set off near Dusty and Jess' apartment.  Joyce said that she did not see or hear the Let Freedom Ring Tour (a B-25 Mitchell, a F-7F Tigercat, a P-47 Thunderbolt, a P40N Warhawk, and a P51D Mustang), which was sponsored by Hangar180 , fly overhead around 5:45 p.m. but she might've missed it most likely owing to having been napping at the time.
